- Is the GED® curriculum similar to CAPS?
- Yes, but there are important differences to understand!
- The GED® has been developed from an American perspective in high-level American English.
- The tests themselves are less focused on rote learning and memorisation of facts, compared to CAPS.
- The curriculum and tests are nonetheless not “easy” and will require thorough preparation.
- The tests cover a mix of topics and skills that CAPS learners will study in high school.
- What subjects are covered in the GED® tests?
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Reasoning Through Language Arts (English)
- Social Studies
- Science
- What are the costs?
- $90.00 (USD) per test
(Approximately R6,000.00 (ZAR) for all four tests)
- $8.00 (USD) per practice test (compulsory)
(Approximately R525.00 (ZAR) for all four practice tests)
- Also consider travel and fuel expenses for visiting official testing centres, such as Boston City Campus in Polokwane (Pietersburg).
- Also consider SAQA Foreign Credential Evaluation fees
(Approximately R2,500.00 (ZAR))
- Is the GED® suitable for home-schooling or independent-learning?
- Yes!
- A learner can study on their own, use the resources available on GED.com, enrol in a specialised programme, or sign up for local lessons to prepare for the GED® tests, such as is offered by Prolific Maths.
- A learner decides their own pace: they may spend as long as they like preparing for a test, whether it be a few months, a year, or longer. It is up to the individual’s needs and capabilities.
- The four tests do not have to be completed in a specific order.
- If a test is failed, it can be reattempted at a cost.
- Is the GED® a good option for a South African learner?
- Yes!
- In South Africa, the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluates the GED® qualification to be equivalent or most similar to a South African Matric, National Senior Certificate (NSC), or NQF-4 qualification.
- Many, but not all, tertiary study institutions accept the GED®, including Boston City Campus in Polokwane (Pietersburg), and Two Oceans Graduate Institute in Cape Town.
- Is the GED® a good option for a learner whose first language is Afrikaans?
- Strong English reading, writing, and comprehension skills are very important for success in earning a GED®.
- A learner may take as much time as they need strengthening their English until they are ready for a test.
